Pricing in 2025
Midjourney is subscription-only. Basic runs $10/mo for around 200 images. Standard is $30/mo with 15 hours of fast generation. Pro is $60/mo with 30 hours and stealth mode. Annual plans knock 20% off.
DALL-E 3 works two ways. You get it bundled with ChatGPT Plus for $20/mo, or you hit OpenAI’s API and pay per image. Standard 1024×1024 runs about $0.04 each. Larger or HD images cost around $0.08 to $0.12.
For high volume, DALL-E’s pay-per-use model adds up fast. Midjourney’s flat fee is easier to budget for.
Image Quality
Midjourney v6 still produces more polished output. The lighting, textures, and compositions feel more “finished” on the first try. DALL-E 3 is good, but it sometimes has that overly smooth AI look.
Where DALL-E wins is prompt adherence. If you need a specific object in a specific position, DALL-E usually nails it without as much trial and error. Midjourney tends to interpret prompts more loosely, like it’s going for mood over literal accuracy.
Ease of Use
Midjourney finally has a proper web app at midjourney.com. Before that, you had to use Discord, which was clunky for image work. The web app is clean and fast.
DALL-E 3 lives inside ChatGPT or the OpenAI API. If you’re already paying for ChatGPT Plus, it’s right there. For API access, you need a separate OpenAI developer account.
How I Evaluated These
I haven’t used either tool in my actual work. I run Ollama for local LLM stuff and don’t generate images regularly, so I went through OpenAI and Midjourney’s docs, read G2 and Capterra reviews, and spent time on Reddit threads to see what people are saying in 2025.
One thing stood out: people doing creative or artistic work lean Midjourney. People doing product mockups, marketing visuals, or anything that needs to plug into a workflow lean DALL-E.
Tradeoffs Worth Knowing
Midjourney locks you to their platform. There’s no API for v6, no way to self-host. DALL-E 3 is available through OpenAI’s API, which means you can wire it into n8n or Make if you want to automate image generation.
But OpenAI’s content filters are tighter. They block more stuff out of the box. Midjourney is more permissive, though they’re not the Wild West anymore either.
My Take
Go Midjourney if you want the best-looking images and you’re fine with another subscription. Go DALL-E if you need API access or you already pay for ChatGPT Plus.
Honestly, both are solid in 2025. The quality gap has closed compared to a year ago. Run the same prompt through both and pick the one that matches your style.
